GBRIA Individual Excellence in Safety Award

The Greater Baton Rouge Industry Alliance and the Safe Nation Radio Program (www.safenation.org) are teaming together to recognize individual excellence in safety in the region’s industrial facilities.  The “GBRIA Individual Excellence in Safety Award” will recognize those individuals who demonstrate acts above and beyond normal safety duties required of them.

Qualifying persons: Individuals who work for or at a GBRIA facility, including member company employees, contractor employees, or vendors, are eligible.  In addition, members of the community who are not officially associated with any member facility may be nominated.

Qualifying Act: To qualify, the person must have done something out of his or her normal job/safety duties to report or correct a hazard.

Examples of Qualifying Acts:

1: Employees leaving a facility on their own time notice a flare run over, causing a small grass fire. Had they just reported it, it might have spread to a very serious level. They stopped, one went to report it while the other put the fire out.

2:  Employee noticed a pipe leaking oil into a drainage canal. Being a qualified operator, the employee used her backhoe to dam up the canal before the spill became a major environmental incident.

3: A worker took the time to read the fine print on some breathing air bottles and found them to be mislabeled. There was no hazard to the workers, as the air was tested and good to use, but by questioning the labeling, a non-compliance issue that had gone unnoticed was corrected.

4:  A member of the community notices railroad crossing lights are not functioning and reports the problem to the adjoining industrial facility.

An example of a non-qualifying act would be a fire watch putting out a fire in their area of responsibility, or an electrician fixing an electrical hazard as part of their normal work.

Awards:  A certificate with the individual’s name, recognizing the Excellence in Safety act, will be printed by GBRIA.  GBRIA plant managers will present the awards to their employees at their facility.  A prize valued at approximately $25 will be awarded.  The prizes will include restaurant coupons that will be mailed to the winners by Safe Nation (subject to availability).

Permission to use the nominee’s full name must be obtained prior to airing the name on the Safe Nation Radio Program. If no permission has been granted, only a nominee’s first name will be used.  All nominees will be listed on air, along with their immediate employer and the location of the safety act (with permission). One person will be picked at random from the group of nominees each week to win the award and have their safety act read on the air.  With permission, each winner will be listed on the Safety Excellence Hall of Fame page on safenation.org.
